𝘞𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘗𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦.

The issue of worksite hours is certainly one that has been raised by a number of stakeholders through the MCC consultation process and the Department of Housing and Public Works has been investigating options in this respect. We are also aware of the changes that NSW has progressed.
The legislation between the states varies and in Queensland worksite hours are governed by each local government’s laws or in the event a Local Government has not made a local law under the Environmental Protection Act 1994 (EPA) which is administered by the Department of Environment and Science (DES). Our Department has been working closely with DES to develop options for possible changes to worksite hours during the COVID-19 crisis but this would require an amendment to legislation. In Queensland, local governments have primary responsibility for policing worksite noise matters and we will also need to engage with councils in relation to any proposed changes.
The Queensland Government is giving consideration to a range of measures to ease the impact of the current health crisis on businesses but it will not be possible to make changes to legislation prior to the Easter public holidays. In the meantime, the current arrangements regarding worksite hours will remain in place.
We will continue to consult with you and all of our key stakeholders as we work on these issues and will advise you as soon as possible when any new arrangements are put in place.

Nominations are now open for the 2020 Apprentice Challenge to be held on 1st July 2020 at Skills Tech TAFE Acacia Ridge.

We have 12 positions available, so get your nominations in as soon as possible.

Winners will compete against the rest of the country at the Conference in March 2021.

Dear Members and Past Delegates

The AWCI ANZ Executive Committee wishes to inform you that our 75th Annual Conference will not take place this year.

We are aware that some of you will be disappointed by this decision; please understand that it has not been undertaken lightly. Given the current economic situation and the uncertainty surrounding the impact of coronavirus, the AWCI ANZ Executive Committee felt that postponing the Annual Conference was the most responsible, and safest, course of action.
To help offset any disappointment, we would like to announce that the 75th Annual Conference will take place in early 2021 instead: from 18 to 20 March in sunny Queensland. The venue will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
The state winners of the 2020 Awards of Excellence will be announced at the March 2021 Conference. In addition, the Apprentice of the Year Competition will be a prominent part of the Conference, with winners from the 2020 state-based apprentice challenges representing their local region.

The AWCI ANZ will make more information available as it comes to hand.

We look forward to having you join us for another successful Annual Conference in March 2021.

After about 7 calls from contractors asking where they could purchase P2 masks from.due to supply chain disruptions, I contacted Work Safe Queensland on what would happen on site if a contractor was unable to get their preferred mask due to this.

The following is part of their response, which in short suggests the movement away from disposables to half face reusable as filters are more readily available.

If the risk is such that respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is required to prevent inhalation of airborne contaminants, then the lack of RPE supply would not be an excuse under reasonably practicable grounds to perform the task without the RPE.
Section 18 of the Work Health and Safety Act (the Act) defines Reasonably Practicable as: - Reasonably practicable means that which is, or was at a particular time, reasonably able to be done to ensure health and safety, taking into account and weighing up all relevant matters including: - · the likelihood of the hazard or the risk concerned occurring

· what the person concerned knows, or ought reasonably to know, about the hazard or risk, and ways of eliminating or minimising the risk

· after assessing the extent of the risk and the available ways of eliminating or minimising the risk, the cost associated with available ways of eliminating or minimising the risk, including whether the cost is grossly disproportionate to the risk.
